Artificial Groundwater Recharge Project

8th Jul, 2026

Bottlers Nepal Limited (BNL), in partnership with the Centre for Integrated Urban Development (CIUD), has launched an Artificial Groundwater Recharge Project at Civil Service Hospital, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable water stewardship and climate resilience in Nepal.

The project addresses one of Kathmandu's most pressing environmental challenges, declining groundwater levels coupled with increasing urban flooding. By capturing rainwater and stormwater runoff and channeling it into underground aquifers, the initiative will help replenish groundwater resources while improving urban water management.

Designed to serve a catchment area of approximately 4,345 square meters, the system is expected to recharge nearly 6.25 million liters of groundwater annually. In addition to replenishing vital water resources, the project will help reduce localized flooding during the monsoon season, contributing to a more climate-resilient Kathmandu.

The groundbreaking ceremony brought together representatives from Civil Service Hospital, Bottlers Nepal Limited, Coca-Cola Beverages Nepal (CCBN), and the Centre for Integrated Urban Development, highlighting the importance of collaboration in addressing Nepal's growing water challenges.

The Civil Service Hospital project builds on BNL and CIUD's long-standing partnership in advancing water stewardship across the Kathmandu Valley. Previous groundwater recharge initiatives have been successfully implemented at Ranibari (Ward 3, Kathmandu Metropolitan City), UCEP in Thimi Municipality, Rajdal Army Barrack in Lalitpur Metropolitan City, Balaju Park (Ward 16, Kathmandu Metropolitan City), and most recently in Wards 22 and 25 of Kathmandu Metropolitan City. Together, these projects demonstrate how public-private partnerships can create scalable, community-focused solutions that strengthen Nepal's water security.

Beyond its immediate environmental benefits, the project is expected to serve as a replicable model for hospitals, schools, government institutions, and other public facilities across the Kathmandu Valley, supporting long-term groundwater conservation and sustainable urban development.
